In flooded timber Bass like to hold tight to cover unless they are aggressivly feeding. My go to lure in timber is a jig-n-pig, flipped right at the base of the tree. Watch for the line to move as it is falling. A big percentage of bites will happen on the fall. The reason I like smaller size jigs in timber.

Thanks, Jim. Yeah, I wonder if maybe I just need to be more patient in that kind of structure. Any secondary tactics?

Also, you bring up another point - I also like lighter jigs (3/16 ounce even, I order them theyre so hard to find) because they fall slower and it seems easier to tell what they're doing. Why are most so jigs so damn heavy? Do you just want them to crash to the bottom and then drag them along? I always have trouble with that too. Thanks again-

I try to concentrate on creek channels, channel bends, ditches or roadbeds that go thru the middle of these areas. Sometimes it may a section of timber in a little deeper water. I prefer the heavier jigs as it will crash thru the limbs and get a reaction bite. If it is blue bird and high pressure I'll flip finesse worms w/ 3/16 ounch weight.

 

i also like a slower falling bait but not in terms of weight...i like a bait with alot of appendages, like a jig, brush hog, mutant, etc... that helps slow the fall... when fishing flooded timber i look for secondary structure in the timber field, for instance where a creek channel swings into the timber field, an underwater hump or point, where a grassline meets the timber...something that creates a different underwater enviornment than the rest of the flooded timber around it.

 

i like to trow a weight less baby brush hog watermelon candy

 

I would throw a weightless Senko or Fluke, and a baby brush hog in Watermelon red flake, with a weighted hook. and Texspose it well.

 

Pretend the timber is not even there. Then it is easy to fish. If you can picture the strucure, the cover is a bonus. Just apply seasonal patterns to it and boom you are ready to catch fish. Also if you are c-rigging or making longer casts, it is easier to use as light a weight as possible to keep from hanging up a bunch. I have found on occasion during blue bird calm days during post spawn through fall, a real heavy weight with a plastic or jig will induce reaction strikes. Be ready though they can inhale and spit out a jig super fast. That's as far as my wisdom goes though.
