LAKE:   Stillhouse
DATE: Saturday 31JAN107 6am-3pm
WEATHER:  Cloudy, air temp: 30-38.  Winds: out of the North 14 - 15
WATER CONDITION:  (Temps 48-51) rapidly rising muddy water to mid lake, normal stain in the main bowl.

SUMMARY:
Fished the FAN season opener on Stillhouse Saturday.  It was one of the toughest fishing days I've had in a very long time.  Post frontal, steady north wind, cold temps, full moon, rapidly rising muddy water.  Definitely was one of those throw the kitchen sink at all the potential fish holding areas kind of days.  Tried a variety of things from Jigging the rocks and trees, throwing chartruesse every thing in the mud, winding and grinding cranks and movers on the wind blown points, to finesse presentations in the clearer waters.  Unfortunately nothing panned out for us; skunkage and man does it stink.  Of 33 teams only 9 weighed fish.  A total of 12 fish were brought to the scales.  Hats off to those who were able to muster up a fish or 2.  Tough day for sure.  I hear the other tournaments had similar results.

I guess the only real helpful information I can provide for now is that the conditions are worth paying attention to if you plan on visiting Stillhouse any time soon.  Beware of large floating logs.  There's a big log jam at the bridge on both banks that will send plenty of loose debris down lake.  The water is chocolate milk from the river down to stretch of lake between River bend and Dana Peak.  From there down it clears up and is 'normal' stain down stream to the main bowl.

To give you an idea of how much the lake came up:  If you were to pre-fish on Friday you would have fished a lake that was was 6-7 feet deeper on Saturday.

Launched at River Bend.  The water was to the very top of the ramp.

I can echo those statements Rude, great write up.

I can only remember a handful of days like Saturday... brutal, cold and just plain nasty. We started off throwing a big blade at some newly flooded bushes just outside the marina. Water temps at 48 degrees and just couldn't get any confidence in that pattern. So ran to a main lake bluff and threw a football head jig, on the third cast I get a bump but never took the bait. Threw back and felt the classic thump that allowed me to swing a squeaker in the boat. About 3000 casts later, that was the only two bites we got all day. Went back to the weigh in with my one fish.

Hats off to Jeff and the gang. FAN is a class act and we can't wait until Buch... :)
