Yall tell me what you think. I was out there this past weekend in some brutal conditions with the 7500+ other people looking for grandma lunker.

Numbers were there for us, probably 50 or so in the four days there (pre-fished thursday) and we only caught 5 on Sunday, so the other three days were pretty good considering many people we talked to didnt catch but a few per day, if anything. We threw everything there is to throw at them, and my aunt and dad caught most of the fish. I was fishing mainly frogs and big baits. It was an individual tourney but we decided we would split up the winnings some how if it worked out. we mainly fished lilly pads, coves and some flats when we could stand the wind and rain. Most fish were caught on craw-type baits in 1-8ft water.

My aunt had what was no doubt a 6+ money fish yesterday that we all saw and it got into a tree and snapped off. Fished the same craw bait as the story below.

Now for the main story and your opinions on it:

We were fishing structure on saturday we had marked on the gps from a few fish we found the day before and my dad was throwing the craw bait again. Got a bite, set the hook, and it was on. Immediately he said it was a big one and it buried itself in the grass. He kept a tight line and my aunt trolled a bit toward it. He finally got it out of the grass and this thing turned the other way and his drag spun a bit. He then tightened the drag down, fought it, started horsing it toward us, I got the net ready, and when it got to the point I would have been able to dip it I held back bc of the super stained water I didnt want to get in the way since I couldnt see it. Fish made a b-line under the boat, dad didnt hit the button to release the line, his rod doubled over, 17lb flouro snapped, and my dad looked like he could puke. I am not experienced enough to knwo what it might have been, but my aunt has fished the pro tour, and my dad has been fishing since the 50's and they have their ideas of what it was, but we all agree it was well over 10lbs. Was this thing a bass? If so, wouldn't it have jumped? What if it was a big spawned out hog? To those of you who have caught 10+ lb bass -- when you got it on did it surface like probably 98% of the bass I have caught?

I try to convince my dad it was a big catfish or drum, but he still swears it was a bass. Either way, no one ever saw it and we will never know.

Re: Rayburn Big Bass Splash.  The one that got away?

Most of the bass that I have caught over 6-7lbs. or so never surface. I don't know if this is a function of their size or the fact that most of those fish were caught in deeper water or both. The ones thatdid break the surface usually only came about 1/2 way out of the water.

First mistake was tightening the drag. With big fish, you want to play them as much as you can and take your time. I've caught plenty of big fish and a lot of them that are over 10 pounds will run like a red fish and power their way deeper without coming up. Once you play them a while though and realize they aren't going anywhere, a lot of those will finally head for the surface. With that said, your dad probably hooked a gaspergoo. :D I hooked a giant on Lake Amistad a few years ago and it ran from tree to tree and I finally got it to the boat only to find it was a big striper so sometimes, you just never know. Makes a good fish story though. ;)

I was also out there. Numbers were real good for us on Friday. We caught probably around 30 fish, fishing the grass and humps with 500 other boats, but none of them big enough to win money. Most fish came on traps and jigs. Biggest was right at 3 lbs.

Saturday we decided to get away from the boats and head way up north. Boats were still thick up there. Did find some grass beds with only 50 or so boats on them. Plenty of fish in there but no money fish. We only caught 5 fish Saturday. Wasted alot of time fishing deep pts and ledges. No fish on ;em. Finally I idled thru all the boats and went as far as I could til I was kicking up mud to get away from the circus then dropped the trolling motor and hooked a huge fish. She ran into some bush and broke me off.

Sunday I respooled with 50lb power pro and went back to the same spot, and caught her on my first cast. 6.77lbs and good enough to get 2nd in the 11am hour on Sunday. Caught 3 other fish and decided to head to the circus err weigh in. Sat at weigh in and watched boats get swamped, sunk and over turned as they were pounded by 4 ft waves at the beach.

Ah, if you didn't see it - who knows what it coulda been!!! You'll be thinking about that fish for a long time - that much's for sure!

But yeah, a lot of the bigger fish don't readily jump. I've had two over 10. One of them didn't come up for more than a minute and half. I've seen one over 10 and one over 11 caught and both of those fish fought like crazy and didn't come up for more than 2 minutes. In fact, I kept on telling my friend that the 11 lber was a drum... and golly... did I have to eat my words when it came up for the first time!!! So it's very possible that fish was a major toad!!!

Yea sometimes they come up and sometimes they don't . It's just impossible to tell. That big ole bass that broke my heart on Travis a couple of weeks ago spent half the time it was on in the air and it was eassily 10 plus. Seems like when your in the grass some of the big girls will try to bury down instead of coming up.

We were out there also pre-fished thursday, and caught good numbers, a lot of 2 and 3 pounders but no trophys. Most of the fish we caught tried to bury themselves in the grass, but a few of them took to the air. Sounds to me like that could have been a bass.

Nice goin Tamale! At least one Austinite got to pay for his trip.

Yea man I kept telling my dad and aunt to get rid of their line and put on braid. I had plenty for everyone, but nooo. Then of course they were the only two to hook a big one :(

such is life.

Re: Rayburn Big Bass Splash.  The one that got away?

Hard to say, but in the last 14 months at Rayburn, I've caught a 4+ lb catfish on a TX Rigged lizzard, a 13+ lb catfish on a crankbait and a 10+ lb carp I fowl-hooked in the tail on a wacky worm (that fish kicked my azzz). Each one of them hit like a bass and I just knew I had a money fish...Oh the disappointment! We just now got the catfish slime out of the carpet!
My dad fished the Big Bass Splash and stayed in the Buck Bay/Needmore area 2 days and Veech the 3rd day. Most folks he spoke with struggled as well and his biggest fish was only about 2#s.

Re: Rayburn Big Bass Splash.  The one that got away?

I had a similar experience on Town Lake. I hooked up with something on a bleeding red eye shad ratl trap right at Red Bud point in my kayak. I got dragged around for 10 minutes and never saw the fish. I made the mistake of tightening the drag instead of letting it drag me for 10 more minutes. I never saw the fish and to this day I still throw ratl traps in the same spot. My guess is it was a Goo, but a big catfish or bass could have done the same... Who knows, but I get so curious when I think about what it was...

By the way its alot easier when a fish dives under your kayak than a boat, the kayak just turns and then you go for a tow ride wheres a boat you have to let line out and try to get to the other side without getting caught up or taught. You'll get em back...
