Here's my fishing report:
Fished with two friends starting from the south launch about 2P. Skies partly cloudy, wind 10-15, hot. Notice when I launch lots of older guys pulling out. Thought to self-"where are they going", this is Choke, you know, CHOKE! Have my trusty Academy map, and GPS with lots of great spots in the waypoint list. Find the first spot close to ramp, and wind starts to pick up, somewhere between 30 MPH and Hurricane Rita. Trolling motor quickly proves inadequate. Move over to the four fingers area to get out of wind, but angle of wind seems to be unfavorable. Resort to tying off to snags. Learn lesson-careful grabbing snags when your boat is sailing past at 10-15 knots! May cause fisherman to lose balance. Learn that it takes foothold on motor fin and two good strong friends to haul fat butt back into boat. Good news-get to buy new cellphone! Fishfinder gets confused with yo-yoing of bow, tells me either 6 feet or 600, not sure which. Finally put it out of it's misery when snap transducer cable that tagles in gator mount as I raise TM. Run over the Morgan Point, but wind God toys with me by shifting wind more southward, the eastward when we try to run for the southshore. Finally throw in the towel, and head in. Lawnchair crappie fisherman lands nice bass at launch, and then asks me how they were biting. I search for humor on his face-none there! Drive back to Austin with an uncomfortable wet wedgy, and black lab sniffs me for 10 minutes trying to figure out why I don't smell like a bass as usual, but more like lake water. Both wife and dog DO try unsuccessfully to hide humor(after all, my lab is female).
Anybody want to but a boat?

Sorry about the rough day at choke, the wind really throws a wrench in the whole thing.  I fished a tourney on Saturday there and only managed one fish, my partner landed three and first place was 25lbs with one over 10lbs!  Why didnt we find them?  Who knows but sometimes they are there and other times they are not.  We knew we had found fish in our spots before.

Hope Choke treats you better next time!

Those are the breaks.  I was at Choke during that magical weekend of March 21-22 when it seemed like everyone was catching big bass between 13-15 lbs with the exception of me of course.  Well, between my g/f and I, we managed a grand total of 2 fish the entire weekend!!  I guess there are two sides to every story.

You tell a great story................even if no fish were involved.   ;D

I've fished Choke Canyon since the mid 80s..............and I'd be lying if I told you I've never had my butt kicked on that lake............and most of those butt kickings came on hot, windy days.  Some times you get the Bear..................and sometimes the Bear gets you.

Thanks for the humorous report...............and sorry you had a tough time out there...............I'm sure you'll get into them next time.

Yeah, I hear you on the wind. It will be beautiful 5-10 mph and blue skies. Until I latch the trailer to the truck, then the wind fires up to 30+/every time.

Choke is great right now, but you are right; there aren't many places to hide from that knarly south/east/west wind. I have a 109lb thrust TM, and the wind was all it could handle two weekends back.

Everyone kept telling me, "throw a senko, they will bite it". I'm thinking, how the heck can you throw a senko weightless in 30 mph winds?

Educate me, I'm listening.

man, classic report! ;D

sounds about like my night on Wake Austin last night. My pops and I are going to CHoke over the 4th and I have been sending him all the reports I find online. I will be sure to send him this one. We call it Fisherman's Law. You were just held down by Fisherman's Law. Happens to us all, all the time.

the good thing about it, is there is always a next time.

There isn't much I can do in 30mph winds except throw a rattle trap or crankbait and cover water...

The first time I went to choke with Andy, first 10 minutes I broke my transducer on my trolling motor, 25 minutes into the trip Andy saw a gator and hid in the bottom of the boat and we left. :)

Great Report, I remember going to Choke with a guy in his 16 ft flat bottomed jon boat. Same deal we left Pville wind was about 5 to 10 got to Choke 25mph to 500 mph it felt like. We lanched at the ramp past Calliham towards the river and was actually able to fish alittle until we decided to see if we could make it across the lake. I had my back to the front of the boat since waves were crashing over the front and I looked at the guy driving and have never seen eyes get as big as his just before I was knocked of the seat by a wave over the front. Did I mention it started to rain? Good times for sure. Next time at Choke will be better for you, she just had to show who was boss!

Been there done that! Keep your head up, and dont get down on Choke, you now have great ammo for a return trip. We were there last weekend tent camping, TENT CAMPING WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Never again will I do that, even had a window unit that was useless. Going to head back on the 4th.

here is the post of the James who won our club tourney last week. Hope this helps you guys going there this weekend:

I fished a lot of the south shore side of the lake on Friday evening and most of the day Sat.. There was no visible grass in most of the places we fished. There are fish in the woods on the south shore.. First point west of the big point with the red roof building, bout a mile and a half from South Shore Park. It's not really a point, more like a flat with a lot of trees. Six and seven feet of water. Also fished the trees in front of the prison, and caught a few in there.. There is a little grass in salt creek and just west of the Mason Point ramp.. Good rocky banks along the south shore and we caught some decent fish there.. We caught a lot of little undersized fish.. But I fished till 3:15 and only caught five keepers.. But they were good ones and I had 25.81. But it helps to have a 10.17 in the boat.. Even a blind hog can find an acorn now and then.. Caught 80% of our fish flipping trees.. Ol Monster in Plum and Junebug and W/M Gold brush hogs.

Hadn't fished Choke in over two years living at Falcon, but really enjoyed the day. And the grass is nothing like the last time I was there.. I usually live on the point on South Shore across from the red roof. Big fish came from Three fingers off a tree next to grass on a point. Lots and lots of folks on the water, especially in the Mason Point area, I will suppose due to the high winds.. But lots of folks in four fingers too.. Lots of grass there..

See you on the water..
