Was in Kingsland yesterday and got several reports that the whites are running in the Llano river up to the Kingsland slab. The river was flowing at around 500 cfs as of yesterday.

Also, if you're in Kingsland and like Mexican food be sure to stop at Alfredo's on Hwy 1431 West. Great Tex-Mex and you can bring your coldies in with you 'cause they don't have a beer license.

Hey JT, I have never fished the area but I live in Leander. Do by chance have a map or can you give more details of the area you are speaking of so I can google it? Feel free to pm me.

Thanks in advance.

Tony, this part of the Llano is accessed from the the Ranch Road 3404 low water crossing in Kingsland. The locals call this area "the slab" because the river flows over a huge slab of granite bedrock there. This part of the river is about a mile above where it empties into Lake LBJ. You can park at the low water crossing and the river is easy to wade. There are lots of rocks, sand bars and deep holes. It's a pretty cool area, been going there for at least 30 years.

I fished the slab last week with fly rod and zipped...but it is such a cool area I didn't mind a bit. You can wade all the way to where it dumps into LBJ. Went down there today just to check it out and it is running about double what it was last week..nice water. has to be pulling some whites up out of the lake.

I think a fly rod or ultra light with spinners would work in all the holes.

I'll probably take another shot at it next week. Just a great place to get away from the crowd.

I'd skip the north side and head for the south channel...I fished about a mile downstream last time.

Here I am a native Burnetite, but have never fished the "The Slab."

How would I fish it from the bank? Is there parking at the crossing? How far would I need to travel till I get to fishable water?

Trying to learn fly fishing. Got equipment and flys, but what flys are recommended? Or, would I do better just throwing a pet spoon with a spinning reel?

Always wanted to learn the area and now have the time.

thanks!

There's plenty of parking at the low water crossing and the water is fishable from the crossing all the way down to the lake. You can fish above the crossing too but for whites I would fish from the crossing downstream. I usually throw 1/8 oz or 1/16 oz jigs on light tackle. Getting to the good holes usually involves some wading. You just need to visit the area and explore around a bit to find the best spots.

Guy's 3404 is at the north end of Kingsland, it only goes to your right going south from HWY 29 about 5mi, when you get to the slab park on that side of the river no parking across it. Watch for the purple post marking NO TRESSPASSING. GOOD LUCK. MIKE

I put the boat in by RR2900 and fished upstream. Nada. Nobody I talked to was catching anything either. The water was pretty clear and I was able to get about half way to the slab I guess. A lot of water still in the river.

I was out there Sunday. I parked at the slab and walked down stream for about a mile. No bites. The river was running strong and clear. Nobody I came across was catching. One guy claimed to have see a few.
