Launched at 5PM and pulled at 8PM. Water temps ranged from 69-75. Visibility was a few feet except closer to the dam.

Marked very few fish for the first hour or so. Threw Citizen 7 and Deps 250 a bunch and didn't even get any follows or bites down low on the citizen. Switched it up and put the dropshot on with a 7" watermelon zoom spiral worm. Got doinked pretty much every cast but they were likely small. Caught 1 fish on it which was barely a pound. Small schools of shad were getting harassed by small bass all over.

Around 7PM I started moving back into the west channel of redbud. Zero bedding activity left and tons of drum cruising around in the shallows. I moved into a little pocket and saw a good bass swimming. Threw a few things around including the swimbaits, frogs and jigs with no action.

Started drifting a bit more with the wind (it was gusty with the incoming front) and I looked to my left and in 2 feet of water there was a bass just sitting there. Im only 8 feet or so away at this point. Clearly she saw me but quickly grabbed the jig rod and pitched it few feet past her. I hopped it 2 times and she saw it. She gave a little tail flutter then stuck her nose down in the 4 inches or so of vegetation. One small tap on the rod with my hand and she sucked the jig in and I set the hook.

When I saw her, I thought she was maybe 4-5lbs but when I netted her I realized she was bigger. The jig popped out into the net so got a little lucky on that one.

Spotted another big cruising bass on the way in but no luck.

You make it look easy! Congrats on another swamp donkey, I've never had much confidence in jigs. I feel like they are just dead weight on the bottom and I feel a bit "disconnected" from the bait, like I cant really tell if I'm "hopping" it right or with enough umph, a little different than something like a dropshot where you can feel even the slightest movement and bounce with the rod tip. I guess it kind of has to do with the rod "always feels loaded up" so I cant tell if I'm bouncing it right or getting bites? I should probably give it more love, it seems a staple in many bass fisherman's quiver.

Big bass love jigs.

It took me a while to get the hang of them. A nice MH rod with a fast tip helps. You can just drag the jig, instead of hopping it a lot. Also let it sit on the bottom and bang your hand on the rod above the reel. Big smart bass hate that little twitch of moment and vibration and usually strike then in my experience. As with most lures, normally a slower action is better than being too quick.

Nice bucketmouth! I really appreciate the above post with jig fishing tips. I can fish a swim-jig with a degree of confidence. Grass jigs and football jigs befuddle me. I tend to hop more than I drag. I’ll have to try the hand bang. I can envision it flaring out a few strands and enticing a strike.

Yup! I started doing it bed fishing and noticed that little vibration is the money! If i hopped or moved the jig with the whole rod the fish would rarely strike. Not my idea, think i watched some bass pros youtube vids on it.

I also throw the jig into really nasty blowdowns and it works great. Not afraid to lose one here or there if it gets hung up, normally theyre sub-$10 even for good jigs. I actually texpose the hook into the trailer (the 6th sense craws are great) so it resists hanging up and it seems to work well, but need more time with that.
