Saturday, May 3rd.
Weather Forecast: Calm Winds with mostly cloudy conditions, clearing by afternoon. Light Northerly winds increasing to 20mph by afternoon. High 80 degrees.
ACTUAL WEATHER CONDITIONS: At 5:30am, it was 57 degrees with winds out of the North at 15mph, gusting to 25mph!
Launched at Point Venture Park at
6am. Fished banks with brushhogs and Baby Rattlesnakes. Also firetiger crankbaits. The water temp was between 69 and 70 degrees. The water was off color near the bank and clear in out of the wind coves. Clear Blue Skies and high wind! From
6am to 10am, Fished around the Point Venture POINT. Charted bait fish at 15 feet, in 30 feet of water. Used Firetiger Flat A and DD-22 to catch mainly 12" to 15" bass. At
10am till Noontime, Moved to Devils Cove. Water in back of Cove was murky and offcolor. Got into a school of small 10" to 12" whites, on slabs in 18-20 feet of water. Only caught two 15" bass there on Bill Norman Little Deep N-Firetiger, fishing the main lake point, as you enter Devils Cove. At
Noontime, Moved to Sandy Creek and found off-color water. Only fished for 1/2 hour without any keepers. At
1pm, moved to Arkansas Bend Park and adjacent cove behind the park. Caught over 50 bass on the underwater, long point in 15-20 feet of water. Used Firetiger crankbaits and White Pearl Bandit 200 crankbaits. There were several big cruiser boats, anchored in that large cove. Water was off color due to high winds and boat wakes.
At
4pm, moved to the long underwater points, across from Lakeway, and continued to catch bass from 14" to 17".
Lost a 5lber, near the Point Venture ramp. It came unbuttoned after it jumped twice. I was using my micro-ultralight with 6lb test line. Had no way to turn or keep the head down, from jumping.
NOTHING BIG!
Highlights of the day:
Watch Glen catch two keeper bass, on the same Flat A lure! AND Glen got his DT-10 Firetiger hung up in a stickup, right above the water. After trying to get it off, a 3lb bass jumped on it while it was still hung-up. Saved the lure and landed the 3lb bass. Too Cool!
IDIOT Boat Drivers: Several times today, I had to stand up and give hand signal to un-coming boaters. They were not looking where they were going and nearly run up over! We were fishing underwater points, out into the main lake. They came with in 30-40 yards before moving over. NOT Stopping! Also saw several near misses between other boaters not paying attention! There were a lot of big sail boats, 30+ footers, several 40+ plus cabin cruisers, creating monster waves, that you could surf on! Ones that when I was between them, could not see land on either side!
Watched a Inboard/Outboard ski boat, full of young adults, not pay attention to the shallow buoys at Arkansas Bend and proceded to hit the sand bar at 40mph. Tore the lower unit right off. They looked at us, only 30 yards away, and wondered what happened?? There must have been atleast 6-7 boats go across the same area, without hurting their boat. Each time a boat would BLOW past the buoys, I just knew something bad was going to happen. We actually saw and heard it!
We got off the lake at 8pm!! Winds had laid down, but still blowing out of the North at 15mph. Also caught a large 15" Crappie of crankbait.
ALSO A LOT OF SAIL BOATS OUT..
