GHPHOTOGRAPHY and I fished our last APD club tournament of the year. It will go down as my best ever catch and miss bass tournament I have ever been in...

Weather was cloudy with misty rain. Air Temp was 50 degrees at 7am. Water temp was 77 degrees in discharge and 69 degrees on main lake.

Started off at discharge, to find about 5 boats scattered up and down the area. We started left side near short grass in water. By 7:30am, Gene had caught 5 slot bass on topwater. I finally got bit on a spro-frog, jr in white. Throwing onto the shoreline and bringing it back in less than a foot. 19.5" ot 4.31lb bass. Second cast into area, resulted in blow-up, breakoff of new 15lb big game. Proceeded to work around the shoreline, heading towards boy scout camp. Switched to buzzbait, spinnerbait, worms and senkos's with limited results. Seems the fish were in the thickest brush. Switched to Yum Money Hound and immediately got blowups..By 11am. I had only one bass and Gene kept catching on topwater and lizards. I found that the bass wanted your lure against the bank, in the thickest of matted grass or weeds. Spinnerbaits and Buzzbaits did not work. Worms and Senkos would get into the brush, but did not make the noise that they wanted. Money Hound was great if worked fast, but I did not have braid to set the hook. So at 2pm and time running out, I put on a Stanley Ribbit Frog in Watermelon Red. All I can say is the bass could not stand it. Worked it fast over matted grass, thickest brush, and fast retrieve. Missed a lot of blowups, kept casting to same area, 10-15 times. Finally hooking up...Did this the remainder of the tournament. Hooked about 10-12 bass from 6lb to near 8lbs..Most came unbutton at boat, due to 5/0 hook not penetrating solid frog...Also missed a lot of bass because of not having braid. The mono line had too much stretch to set the hook thru the solid body, ribbit frog.

Just an awesome and unforgetable day on the water..

Great report Robert.

I've missed so many strikes with the money hound. I wish Mann's would reissue the old goblins and ghosts. I didn't have a hook up problem with them like I do with the money hound.

Very nice fish there Robert, sorry you missed some of the bigger ones...6-8 lbs is huge for the 'strop. Good to know they're in there.

Just filled two reels w the new Sufix 832 braid that has GoreTex fibers in it. Not been a fan of braid in the past, but it's time to try it, read great things about its durability. It's expensive at $20 for 150 yds...well worth hooking and landing vs. losing that monster.

It pulled drag and went...POW! like a shot gun. My drag was set, I thought. I rarely break a fish off. I saw a couple bucket mouths that were much bigger than the 7 and half I caught, but the fish was just holding the frog, until he jumped and released it..

I will be getting braid, on my frog rig, before I go back....

PM me if interested in trying next week and do not mind me being a back seater.. ;D

Our best 5 fish came in at 20.96 lbs. We won't find out until Tuesday December 14th what place we got. One other team we talked to, got a little over 20 lbs., less than 1 lb of what we caught. They had a 6+ lber. Our top 5 fish were 2.71, 4.32, 2.81, 3.65, and 7.37 lbs. Not a bad stringer (caught and released)
Had a blast !!!
Thanks to Robert putting us on the fish as usual.

Here is the length to weight chart we use for our tournaments.  It was created by the Texas Parks and Wildlife for estimates.  We measure the fish we catch, write down the length of the fish, and release the fish.  Then we convert the lengths, using the chart for determining the weight of the fish.  This way, every one uses the same scale for their weights.

Bought the Spro Frog Jr. in white color, a package of the Ribbit Frogs in watermelon red, a package of the 5/0 hooks (with springs to insert into the head of the frogs like the Ribbit Frog youtube recommends), and 50 lb. Power Pro green braided line (spooled it onto my best reel), and am ready to go back to Bastrop with Robert, hopefully Wednesday afternoon if the weather cooperates. Also bought one package of 3 of a new Ribbit Frog by Stanley called the Bull Ribbit Frog.

Chart works well for State and Water body Catch and Release records.

If you got kids out there it is a real treat for them to have their names in the record books and right now the C&R records are not heavily utilized. I know the YAK fisher-persons are well attuned to these records, easy to collect data, easy to validate. I have a six year old grandson with a big fish pin, his PRIDE and JOY!!!

A useful option for dealing with the braid/mono conundrum is to spool with braid, then use a four turn surgeons knot or double uni's to attach braid to mono. Spool up 15 to 20 ft of mono and use it for those situations when you want more stretch or take it off when you want just braid. Cheaper than buying two rigs and will give good results with minimum hassle.

I have all my level winds loaded with braid and always use a 6 to 10 ft 14 lb mono leader attached with surgeons knot (4 turns). I have NEVER had a 4 turn surgeons knot fail, as long as it is carefully tightened. I use the leader so I can more easily break off bottom hooked plastics, less hassle than fighting 30 to 50 lb braid.

The 21.5 inch fish I caught a couple weeks ago out there weighed 4lb 3oz and not the 5.94 as indicated by this chart.

The chart is definitly erring on the high side. I took my $30 Digital Rapala to Bastrop Scale and had it certified for a Junior water body record my son submitted. Cost $20 to do that.

The aformentioned chart gave his fish almost another pound.

Since our club belives in catching and releasing immediately, we voted on using this chart so everyone has the same information. By all means, at certain times of the year, Fayette and Bastrop fish weigh more (Football size during spawning) and less during (Skinny) other times. It is just a guide.

PER TPWD:

Estimating Weight of Largemouth Bass
This information is provided for those who wish to hold “paper” fishing events, releasing bass immediately after catch instead of holding them for weigh-in. Figures in the conversion table below represent average weights calculated from statistics on 3,178 Texas bass. By using this table, you can get a reasonable estimate of a fish's weight.

This method will never be as accurate as weighing on a certified scale, but it can be helpful at slot limit lakes, or for fishing clubs that wish to provide better care for bass during the hot summer months when fish are easily stressed.

Instructions
•Measure the bass to the nearest eighth of an inch.
•Go down the first (left-hand) column and locate the row corresponding to the length of your fish in whole inches.
•In the “Fractions” columns across the top of the table, find the nearest eighth of an inch that matches the length of your bass.
•Read down the column to find the estimated weight in pounds.
For example, you want to find the weight for a bass that is 18¼ inches long. Find 18 inches in the first column, then move across the table to the 1/4-inch column. Read the estimated weight of 3.46 pounds (3 pounds, 7.4 ounces).
