Spring Break-got a get away trip to Lake Amistad. Man, I wish I could have stayed a couple more days. The fishing was turning on great just as I had to leave. Wednesday PM---got there, set up camp, took the kayak out in the 2 1/2-3 foot breakers---needed a bath anyway---caught two small males drifting a t-rig senko in 20 ft of water---man it was rough. I met with a guide the next morning and we were off to catch some fish---not. Everywhere we went the fish had lockjaw. We managed a few fish with the best being 4 lbs. We saw some in some coves that pushed 13 or 14lbs. We threw the tackle box at them but no takers.
On Friday I set out for a paddle/fish trip---I was staying at spur 406 and wanted to head up Evans Creek. As I paddled towards the entrance to the creek arm I caught a few small males on 5" Senkos. Watermelon Red/Flk. I caught a couple more on a swim bait. I got into the front part of Evans Creek and the wind died down---I mean quit. If I wasn't on top of 60 deg water I would have fried from the heat---hit 102deg in Del Rio that day. Good news---it put the fish on beds. I found some with males on them and the bite was on. I got across the lake to some better water and by the time I got there the wind was out of the SW at about 20mph. The fish turned off---I tried drifting a t-rig to no avail--this was midday. I decided to paddle back to camp to grab some lunch---paddling into the wind. I went back out at about 6pm and the wind died down as I got into the back of California Creek. I decided to downsize to a U-tale Blue Watermelon. Bam--the bite was on again. I landed ten fish in the next hour with the best being about 4lbs---the key was 6ft of water around the trees. Most casts were more like flips of 4-10 feet. They would hit it on the fall. All in all I had a blast but I can tell you that right now it has to be on fire.
Highlights from the trip
Skunk in my tent---lol
Racoon coming up to my truck for dinner while I was cooking on my tailgate.
Gobbling Turkeys being my alarm clock in the AM.

The same game warden checking me three times in the three days I was there and saying he didn't remember me from the day before. I'm a big guy in a kayak---right.

Oh, and the fishing was good. I wish I could get away in the next couple of weeks to go hit the beds.

The BASS.com tournament was there on Thursday and Friday and the best 6 man team won with 110 lbs or so for the two day tourney.

Sure felt like it was class V. I ran into an old school friend, Clark Wendlandt on that windy day and he said it looks like the wind is giving you hell. lol He was right. It's all "water over the bow."

Do you fish Amistad often? I try to as often as i can. My highschool buddies came in second place in that tournament.
Are you going there to watch the BASS Master pros in April? I'm taking leave for ten days just to be there and meet them.
you mentioned that the bass started the spawn. i cant wait to go back. have you tried fishing in the rock quary? there is a camp site where you can leave your vehicle at and hike around. its extreamly brushy so not many boaters get very far in there. its pretty deep as well.

RB,
Nice report. Next year I will be down later, dates already in discussion. You have become a master kayak guy, might want to get involved in some of these kayak tournaments in your spare time ;D

Jon M- welcome to the forum.
