I always like to split the weekend between two lakes. Since I was fishing from the Pond Prowler both days, the weather forecast reinforced my preference to fish Decker on Saturday and Town Lake on Sunday. Decker can be a challenge at the snail pace velocity of the Pond Prowler. Even with the forecast south wind being for under 10 mph, it is very sketchy without my 50# thrust troller. The bad news is that the warranty repair on the 50# troller is not going to happen anytime soon due to the part being back-ordered indefinitely. The good news is the repair part I needed for my 40# troller was $18 from Amazon. I installed it last week and performed sea trials at Pflugerville so I felt confident to go to Decker’s eastern shoreline Saturday morning.

Like I already reported in yesterday’s post, I left Decker a little early, only 10:30AM. I left early for several reasons: I’d been there since 5:00AM, the wind was way over the forecast, I was struggling to get bit and, critically, I needed to get my batts back on the charger to be charged for today’s fishing. Yesterday I got six largemouth and two hybrids. I could’ve kept grinding and maybe found ‘em, but I thought I should save my energy and my batt’s energy for today. It was the right call.

Just like at Decker yesterday, I launched into a deserted lake at 5:30AM. I zig-zagged fishing spots uplake, unable to pass by typically non-productive shorelines because they just look so fishy! I got to one of my go-to spots and got a fun fish in the boat with TR straight tail. I kept moving up and finally decided to drop anchor at Waller. From anchor I caught three good’uns on the TR ribbontail.

By now the dawn patrol had all passed me, saluting me as they torqueedoed up the lake at flank speed, one jokingly offering to not fish the water just ahead of me. I continued uplake and caught a couple of senko fish from Four Seasons. I patiently fished Congress but could not get bit. I moved up and got a couple more TR fish from City Hall. I moved under First to escape the rain. I put on my rainsuit and kept going uplake. I had the 40#er and fresh batts, so I decided to check out Seaholm. It was crystal clear and I couldn’t get bit, but I did get the Amtrak train to blow his whistle at me.

I turned around and fished my way back. I caught a couple more TR fish at The Hilton. I paused once again at Congress but today, all the bridges were stingy, yielding no fish to me. I went on down to the hike and bike and anchored up where I caught my first fish of the day. It turned out to be a great spot and I caught eight “keeper” largemouth with Texas Rig. Total of eighteen largemouth today, the largest being a four-pound tank. Tons of short strikes but enough hookups to keep it fun. Off at 1:30PM

I went Saturday evening and it was a grind. Lots of short strikes and watched nice bass follow my spinner a couple of times. I worked Congress pretty hard and only got a dink. On my way out I stopped at the Waller creek peninsula and tossed out the senko a few times. As I was reeling the senko back in to make another cast - a nice 5 pound 10 oz bass crushed it. That catch made the trip MUCH better. As I pulled the bass into the yak the crowds at congress started cheering as the bats descended for their nightly hunt. Talked to some folks in a boat down by seaholm/railroad tracks that also had a tough day but had pulled in a 5#er. Water temps where 80-82 degrees - up from 77 just earlier this week and up from 72 just a few weeks ago.

Great catch, report, and photos!! Bummer about your Minn Kota. What part is needed?

Thanks, Longhorn! The 50# troller started acting funny at Decker a couple months back. Some call it ”whiskey throttle.” Forward and reverse both work, but with a jolt. The variable speed switch’s control circuit board has gone binary, in other words it is straight 100% or 0%.

When I asked Minn Kota when the connex from China with new control board would arrive, he told me the boards come from Mexico. I joked that since I was Texas, I would try to get word to the mass of migrants camped at the southern border that I would appreciate a couple of them heading back to the Minn Kota factory for a day just to solder up a board.

Next time I’m in the repair shop’s vicinity, I’ll try to get my Helix 5’s transducer back.

I think I saw you yesterday. I was with my father in law in another pond prowler. Was that we spoke to? You were standing up in yours.
Yesterday I was sitting in my yak at a neighborhood lake in Williamson County.
