Got me a 14 ft jon boat a few weeks ago. First boat I've ever owned so needless to say i'm getting used to it. especially getting the boat back on the trailer when I'm done.
Been out to decker (cos i live close by) a few times but it's been more to get the hang of it. Last Saturday a friend and I were out there but it was slooow. Well at least for us it was. My buddy ended up with a LMB about 1.5/2 lbs but I didn't catch anything. Although I did have one fish break off my line.
So i get out by myself about 9:30 this morning hoping to get a few hours in before the front comes in and it gets too windy for my boat. First off I want to say thanks to all those who post on the forum. I had a blast today and it was all because of following tips I picked up on the forum.
I decided to try and fish the reeds toward the back of the lake cos that's what i've read over and over. I've been tryin t rigged power worms and baby brush hogs but no luck and the odd spinnerbait. The water has been real green and a lil cloudy in some places so another tip i picked up on the site is to use colors when it's dark. Earlier this week I saw some pics of some nice bass and in the pics the lure was a firetiger bomber .. or something like that. I had a really little one but I went out and got a larger once that worked at about 4-8 feet. And boy did it work.
After losing the one fish I hooked up on last week I brought a bigger rod with 18lb line. I'd been using pumpkinseed baby brush hogs for about half hour with no luck so i decided to try out the firetiger on the big rod. First cast got me a garfish about 2 feet long. Not a bass but exciting all the same .. got a few jumps outta him. But dang those things got teeth. Those needlenose pliers sure came in handy. Then i stated catching em like crazy LMB, white bass .. hybrids maybe .. i dunno or maybe just some decent sized whites. All on the firetiger bomber. Then I thought I snagged a branch or something. But then the branch took off and started peeling off line. So i tightened the drag and this thing started to move the boat. No jumps or nothing, it was just pulling like crazy and always trying to go under the boat? I even backed off the drag when i saw how much my rod was bending (okuma rod n reel worked great i din have to worry!). After 2-3 minutes (maybe longer i dunno) it comes up about 10 feet away and it's a brownish monster somewhere between 2-3 feet. As i get it up next to the boat it's a huge catfish. I managed to snap one pic but u can only see the head out of the water. The thing was bigger than my cooler. I got over excited and then made a dummy move. I should tried to hold him by the gill cover and get him in the boat (of course i didn't have a net) but i tried to lift him in the boat using the line which promptly broke. The worse part was I lost my go to lure. After sitting down for a few seconds to take it all in i did a little dance even.
I went to my box and looked for any similar lure and found a blue fox spinnerbait that was a kinda tiger color and started using that and sure enough from the first cast it was on. I lost count but i'd say in all 5-6 LMB, 5-6 whites a garfish and a humoungous catfish. All in all not a bad day ;D
Only thing was i felt the wind picking up and kept sayin 10 mins more and the journey back was a little hair raising. i'm not making a dumb ass move like that again. There were whitecap waves on Decker! Gotta admit I was scared for a bit. Being a newb gettin the boat on the trailer is always a lil challenging but today was *&#^@$ hard. Finally did with a lil help from a buy who was gettin off the lake at the same time.
I'll see if I can post a few pics later on. Thanks to everyone whose post I've learnt something from. ABFers rule!!
