Bull Creek Keeper - Good Story

Took the kids (ages 3 and 7) to Bull Creek after work tonight for 30 minutes of fun catching bluegill.  My son has been using a wooly bugger fly with a bead head for his sunfish action and within 20 seconds he had his first catch.  The wild part was that when he threw the bluegill back in the creek, a largemouth bass shot in and made a quick meal out of it.  We have caught 100's of sunfish in Bull Creek and have never had this happen before.

So, in about another 30 seconds my son had a second bluegill on his hook.  This time he put the fish back in the water (hook still in bluegill mouth) where the bass was. As quick as lightning the bass came back and took out the second sunfish.  However, the bass was hooked and the fight was on.  This all happened in about 3-4 feet of water.  I have never seen a bass that aggressive before.  Usually the bass in Bull Creek are very shy and skittish.

First a water body record, now this. He is having a great week!
Tell your son congrats!  That is a beautiful bass with classic markings!  I spent my childhood/teen years wading and fishing bull creek with my best friend.  We would seine live redfin and blacktail shiners, put them in a minnow bucket, and wade upstream for hours at a time.  Minnow no weight (on a gold crappie hook) was our "killer bait."  We caught and released thousands of bass, mostly 1-2 lbs, but an occasional "walter" of 3-4 lbs.  This was long before the C&R movement really became prevalent.  We just enjoyed the catching, and somehow figured that we'd being screwing ourselves (if not anyone else) if we killed them.  Honestly, over several years in the 70s and early 80s, we never saw another person fishing the creek all the way from County line BBQ to where Spicewood Springs crosses 360, and even further up (in those days, there were no fences or no trespassing signs on the creek; don't recall when 360 came through, but it happened when we were "owning" the creek).

So it brings a smile to my face to see your son enjoying that creek.  Incredibly cool.

Very cool indeed, with the swimming attraction there now sometimes the fish are skid-dish, good to see you've got a young pro on your hands.
Sweet catch! Tell your son congrats! How long will it be before were the ones asking him for advice?? ;)

Nice story RO. It brings a feel of tradition to fishing the creek. ;)
That's a great looking fish and a great story. Thanks for sharing.
Wow, there is fishing in Bull Creek?! I thought that was just a dog park and that it was closed for restoration.

Shows what I know... Great story!

Does it make me a pot licker that I want to check it out? :-/ I live 5 or 10 minutes away

Hit up Bull Creek this week and things were still closed.  Looks like last week's storm did a lot of damage (especially around the old dog park area).
