Can you tie braid straight to the spool or do would I need to put some backing on it

I tie straight to my citica. I'm not super hardcore but some people go Mono backing, braid, then fluoro leader. I sucked in cub scouts so that's too many splice knots for me. I don't see a problem going straight to the spool if you can stand the cost of braid. Flip it in one year to get the most out of it.

You can, but some of the braids (especially the coated ones - PP super slick, suffix 832) will slip on the spool on a hard hookset.

To prevent slippage
- Mono backing - at least a couple of layers thick
- Electrical tape - Just a single strip on the base of the spool gives the braid something to grip on. I use this and havent had a problem.
