RO, Stapper and I went fishing to Lake Bastrop this Sunday morning. At 7am, headed to discharge for about an hour...Nothing happening. Then at 8am, went to check out the left side of dam. There were several boats in area. Finally about 8:15am, the schooling began. It was wide spread and the bass were very selective..They would bust up for about 5 seconds and then move...We chased Bass Tail till 11:45am all in front of dam to right side into the cove with power lines...There were several boats chasing, and rarely hooking up...There were some large bass, too...Stapper caught 2 bass and lost a few...I caught and landed only 1 bass on topwater, Zell Pop. Poor RO could not get a bass to the boat, even though he had several hits/blowup...After  a little bit of frustration, we fished to Led Zepplin and had a good time...The fish were blowing up all over the place, but never more than a minute...or until we got close. The only people we saw catching, were using Rocket Launchers and they were catching small ones....

Normally I catch on small flukes, topwater Zell or Yellow Magic, Jigging Spoons, and jerkbaits...But the three were caught on topwater lures only..Had several blowups, but not much hookups...There were several violent hits on topwater, as though the medium chop was messing up the hookup. Most of the time, the wind blew 10mph to 12mph out of the South..

Water temp was 93 near dam...and 100.5 at Discharge...

Who else fished on Bastrop this Sunday morning???

I saw a 519VS with a white chevy pulling a boat back from the lake on 290. I waved at you. I was not pulling a boat, but was in a white Yukon XL. Or I must of been waving at someone else...LOL..

It was extremely tough and frustrating not to atleast snag a bass in those big schools today...:(

That was a fun short trip.  I hadn't been to Lake Bastrop since the June 2009 fish fry over a year ago, so it was cool just to get back out there.  Cooler still was to see all those bass feeding on 1 inch shad on the surface.  Would've been cooler still if they weren't so selective.  I threw the box at them: yellow magic, launcher with pet spoon, white ice fluke, rattle trap, jigging spoon, tnt casting spoon (had one almost landed, but unbuttoned at boat on this one inch spoon), senkos, etc.  I was regretting not bringing my flyrod.  They may have wanted a one-inch clouser, but then again, they may have just laughed at that too.  We still had fun.  Considering I was on call and didn't get called in, I was very grateful to wet a line.  Great morning on the water.

We stopped in there for lunch too.  Had brisket and rib combo in the room with all the taxidermy.  Couple nice classic hill-country white-tail ten points in there.  Decent BBQ too.  Doesn't approach Kreuz's in Lockhart, but dam satisfying after a hard day of hardly catching jack on 'Strop.  Good hot sauce too...

The last two times I've fished Bastrop this year it has been really slow. Little to no schooling action and definitely fewer hookups with fish.  Bastrop has always been a productive lake in past years.  Perhaps the "Mars Convergence" is having a negative affect on the schooling bass this year............ :-/
