Bastrop Report

Got on the water late, 8:00am
Left water at 11:20am

Bastorp had a tournament today, so needless to say you could have walked from shoreline to shoreline with the number of boats.

We did not catch anything and neither was anyone else. Don't know who won the tournament, but I'm guessing if you could show up with two fish, you'd win.

From the sounds of the boats close by, no one was really catching.

Upside I got my boat on the water for the first time since October. Also, I wasn't at work.

Downside, I may be needing to buy a new truck or suv. Tahoe was having trouble pulling the boat, vibrating bad sometimes, and the check engine light poped on. It also blinked a few times, which is an indication the transmission is having trouble. 170K miles, maybe its time.

Sounds like a tough day on Strop.  Hope your truck troubles aren't too bad or too costly.

I heard that Larry & Billy Pederzani won that tournament (Kelly Moore Paint).  Congrats!

Tight Lines!
My son and I fished this tournament yesterday and it was tough.

We fish this lake quite a bit. The south shore park is a great place to camp. So far this year, in four camping trips since April I have caught three fish over 21" but not yesterday. We caught four fish all day; all slot fish. We caught our last fish at 12:30 and it was just over 20". :'(

I've never seen that many boats on the lake, so I guess they had a good turnout.
How crowded is it when a tournament isn't going on?

The last time I fished it was October, but that was in the middle of the week. Which was great, as no one was there.

Yesterday was just tough, but in the end, I wasn't at work and finally got the boat on the water.
Fished Bastrop Sunday 6/7 from 6:30 to 11. Caught about 10 slot size bass, mostly using a white senko at wind blown weed edges. Quite a few dead bass floating at the North ramp and dock this morning, possible relation to the tournament?

Yeah the dead bass are in relation to the tourney!!!! I was highly disappointed in the way that thing was run!!! They had no problem with you weighing in dead fish.... IMO that is one of the main rules that should be followed....Then to just chunk'em back in at the ramp dead for every trailer to squish when they floated up on the ramp was just uncalled for!!!!!!!!!!! The whole day was just terrible IMO....More to follow in the Tourney results section!!!
I thought justing killing fish and not using the meat was against the law. It is a waste of a valuable resource. Killing fish just to win a who the hell cares fishing contest is chicken s%&!
There were plaenty of dead fish after the T but I also talked to Jill that works the pay station at the South shore and she told me that they pumped water in on Tuesday and had a strong current all week. Power plant mgrs said that also caused around 300 dead fish to float into the intake.

I know dead fish after a T is a major concern. But with that being said, we do need to get rid of about half the population on that lake. There are a couple of regulars on the lake that are going to start a petition to change the slot or come up with some other idea to help out there. The petition will go to a biologist who will then shock and make a study to see what to do...
I totally agree with Z. My friends and I have started keeping the unders. TPWD really wants us to take those fish out. Taking the unders out is just as important for the slot limit to work as putting the slot fish back.

Having said that and while I do agree no one should ever be allowed to weigh a dead fish, the fish kill is really not a probelm since I'm sure most, if not all of those dead fish were unders. And yes it is technically a violation to waste game of any kind. Dead fish should never be put back. That tournament was pretty badly run IMO so I'm not really surprised.

Most of us are so conditioned to throw back the little ones, that I think sometimes we do it without thinking, but remember any fish under 14" is a legal keeper on that lake and should be removed.
Hopedale, nice report sorry it was hijacked and turned into a complaint from a dissatisfied tournament angler.

Gents, it's summer time, hot weather on a hot water lake, strong cooler water being pumped in, etc... Fish are gonna die.

TPWD biologists encourage the keeping of unders due to the over population of these runts.

Also to answer ur question about the # of boats when there is no tourney... it's usually minimal during the week but the schooling action is about to heat up and there will be many boats frquenting Strop to get in on some of that action.

Your right Hopedale, good report.....Sorry for apparently hijacking it. I was just trying to answer the question of Fishman1956. Maybe I said a little too much but I am pretty sure this place is for reports and opinions of all local anglers. If I hurt anyones feeling I'm sorry.
I fished Sunday afternoon 6/7 starting about 4P till dark, and very few boats, other than 6 or so pulling wakeboarders/tubes out in the middle.I'm also often there on Wednesdays, and usually half dozen boats at best. I suspect Bastrop is badly overfished, but the beauty and quite are hard to give up on
A sign of the times.....

We used to gripe about the number of boats on the 'trop when the number was 7.

On a weekend. :D
No worries on the high jack.

I do have to say that from that fishing trip, a gentleman known as, _Scooter_ said I currupted him.

Needed a new prop and he wanted to look at boats, so we stopped at Travis marine. He called last night and bought a basstracker. Get's it Friday. LOL

Hey, I do have a question because I usually put the fish back, if you take a fish that is under the slot, it is going to be under the 14" state rule, so how do you prove it came from Strop?

I always keep my park pass with me till I get home with boat. This way, there is proof that I fished it at least. I know you can get pulled over by a game warden on the highway. He has the right to check your boat/fish out....FYI.

Robert
Robert I never thought about that. Good Idea.

That makes sense. But it is tough to wrap around the brain keeping a small fish. Enjoy catching them.
somewhere in the 8.5 lb range won it. only 2 fish caught over 21. 2nd and 3rd were in the 5 lb range.

I caught quite a few in the slot, had two keepers and was less than an inch from a kicker fish myself. White Spinnerbait and baby brush hogs behind the grass and sexy shad rattler on the main lake side of the grass.
