    Fishing for Reds in Galveston

So after seeing some pics of some monster reds being pulled up in Gal this week, and hearing the Reds are real tight to shore right now,I just decided that I am going to head out there this weekend. Will prob just fish sat,sunrise-night or whenever. anyone have any tips or favorite baits I should be using? Also what type of rigs should I throw?Same as for a catfish, like a carolina? What size and type hooks? Was thinking #6 or so circle hooks, should I go heavy heavy with the weights?Any help much appreciated.

Id give some "pony" mullet a try or if you can get your hands on some spanish sardines, cut them in half and use them. The sardines are VERY oily and its not hard for the fish to find. If your going for bulls, make a STRONG leader! Good luck.
When people realize what is really important in life there will be a shortage of fishing rods.

Re: Fishing for Reds in Galveston

So,I fished from 4pm-2am from the 61st peir sat. From 4-8 the wind was blowing pretty decent, not extremely hard but pretty hard, then come 9 it got cold and really really windy.Anyways, I had 3 big poles one with whiting, one with piggy perch, and one with squid.,and 2 smaller ones I was using shrimp on for bait fish. Two poles with cut bait never even had a bite,I would rebait them from time to time and cast back out, nothing, not even nibbles. The squid pole however did bend straight over and have a run made on it.After about 10 min of fighting up comes a 2 ft brown sting ray with the barb cut off already.Ended up with that being big fish of the day,and another 5lb or so gaftop that came off of squid. Caught maybe 20 or so specks but all about 12in or smaller. Did manage one red on shrimp that was only about 11 in.For the first time ever though *all I caught was gaftop and no hard heads, not sure why. After about 2 hours of whining from my GF to go home I ened up packing my stuff up,right after I reeled my big rigs in,wouldnt you know it,the guy next to mes line takes off. He brings in a 38 in bull red. lol At least someone caught soemthing, think the hard core wind and cold front turned the bite off,no one was having any luck, might go back out this weekend to check it ou.

for Reds in Galveston, use mullet (eels eat the squid too fast)

you can use shrimp, but my grandad insisted they be peeled, set out to dry/toughen a while, lets the smell out better he says

in Lousiana, use half a bue crab

here is me with the tournament winning fish (Harrah's Casino in Lake Charles, prior to the Rita hurricane washing it away) i got on 12 pound line and light tackle (the first one got away)
caught on the Jetty, Launched from Hackberry Rod and Gun Club, Terry Shaughnessy,
caught in pretty rough water, the others stayed in the bay, but we were crazy and went bouncing by the jetty, it paid off.

Using live shrimp under a popping cork seems to always work. If you can you should wade fish, work around 3 to 7 feet of water.Whatch for birds (seagulls) swooping down, and cast around those areas, also watch for slicks on the water. Those are where the feeding frenzys are happening. But may also catch some speckled trout. I will be heading out there for the same thing around june 5th and cant wait.
They got to start biting sometime!

Fishin for reds in galveston was always at San Luis Pass. You could always catch bait on the beachside or bayside. I would use at least a 10"-12" live whiting/croaker/mullet on a 3-4ft. long drum leader with a 4-6oz. surfweight/spiderweight. Biggest one caught at the pass was about 50 lbs. or so. I still have that pic somewhere....fish-on...

Re: Fishing for Reds in Galveston

Now I am getting excited... I got a big house on the beach in Galveston starting this Fri for a week.

I am a novice in the salt water.

Last year when I was there, got skunked with a guide ( pretty much ) and then finally caught a fish by wading out to my chest and casting a live jumbo shrimp as far as I could. It was like a 4-5 lbs gaftop.

I hope to improve my fishing this year. So Reds up shallow huh?

Keep the info coming if you can. Anything helps!

    Thanks,

    EA

    EA,

I used to live in the Lake Jackson/Freeport area..fished all around in the Bays & Gulf.. Some ideas.

Gulf -- Bulls will most likely be past the 3rd bar/cut. If you have a big rig, wade out with it and wing it past the 3rd bar/cut. Baits to use would be live mullet/cut mullet or croaker. You wont be getting any trash fish with these baits.

If you dont have a big rig and intend to use bass type rods, free-line shrimp in the 2nd cut. Who knows what you may end up with. Also, Sand Eels & Top Waters early in the morning are good.. If the wind is down and the gulf is flat (rarely), you can clean up on Trout.

Bays - I fished from San Luis to X-mas bay to Matagorda.. easiest is shrimp under a cork, but as said before, you can catch anything (or miss a lot of bait-stealers).. Sand Eels are good.. look for grass, cuts, shell.. SLP (San Luis Pass) has a lot of cuts that go from inches to 10+ft deep due to tide flow, those are key areas to fish.
What can be counted doesnt always matter=> what matters cant always be counted.

    Papabear,

Thanks a lot for the tips.

When you say 3rd cut, does that mean past all the breaking waves?

Last time I was there, I could not get out that far. ( It was really windy )

Again, thanks for the tips. I am going to take a light surf rod, and my Shimano 7-8'' Ex heavy Swimbait rod ;D. I do not have one of those huge surf rods, and the SB rod is not the best for distance casting to say the least.

But I will do my best and let everyone know the results.

    EA
