You might want to hold on to your old prop though, if you like to fish shallow back lakes. Although the steeper pitch will lower your RPMs and get you a higher top end, the trade off is loss of hole shot esp. in shallow water.

Almost all motors will last a lot longer if not run at WOT. Most should cruise at 4500-5000 max, lower if you can stand it. Good luck.

I have an 03 procraft w/ a 90 classic 2-stroke. Running a 3 blade aluminium 23 pitch @ 5500 rpm's WOT @ 52 mph. Stainless according to nettles happens with a 3 blade 22 pitch laser 2. Faster hole shot and better handling @ 50 mph. Of course it sounds like his boat is a lot heavier than mine. Might make a difference. Brian

I met Matt at Mansfield Dam Ramp and tested my spare 19 pitch Alluminum prop. Still ran near 6000 rpms. I have a Mercury Lazer 2 prop I was going to let him try out. It is a 23 pitch...

I told him to run a higher pitched prop for lakes and a lower pitch prop when fishing flats. Never try to go over 5000 rpm's if possible. Just my $0.02....

    More to follow....

    Robert

I have a 90 hp Merc also. I have a 19 degree prop. 3 blade. I just had my tach fixed and found out i was running only 5000 rpm @ wot. Talked with Nettles and he said i need a 17 pitch to get the rpm's up to 5400 wot. every 2 degrees you gain or lose 400 rpm's. I bought the boat used and it had a 3 blade 22 Tempest ss and it would take forever to get on plane. Nettles also said that with the 19 pitch prop the 90 hp was more like a 65 hp.

Robert, Your friend has a setup or tach problem. Unless he is running 47 mph, which I doubt considering the hull. He has more work to do than throwing poop against the wall with various props and hoping that it sticks.

Tunnel hulls are a different animal than your boat, and a heck of a lot different than my boat. Those flats tunnel hulls love the big surface area 4 blades specifically made for that setup. I'd say get one of those in a 19p. Than adjust your setup properly, and you should be there. A vengeance might be a workable 3 blade if holeshot is good or even possible with a 3-blade.

Including setup, tachometer, prop, proper lower unit. I would start at the console and work your way back to the root cause of the problem.
So I am having same problem with my 1999 mercury 90. It was running in between 5000&6000 rpms and then I changed the spark plugs and the next time I took it out it was running at 7200 with throttle just past the half way point. I can't imagine the plugs would cause this issue, so any ideas?? My alarm went off and I thought I was low on oil at first then I noticed the tachometer was reading high.

Check the tach pin settings and see if that lowers it...they are located on the back of the tach. I doubt he is turning 7k plus. I would ask him if at wot does it sound like a cox 202 model airplane motor?

I have a 2002 90 horsepower mercury on the back of my 18 foot tracker and it sometimes has it's a similar issue where the tachometer reads good 1500-2000 rpms higher than reality. Only happens occasionally when first starting the motor or getting on plain, but normally corrects itself or goes away with a tap of the glass. It then reads me to be maxing out at 5100-5300 at around 45mph. Nearly had a heart attack when I first saw it jump that high, mostly because I was 17 miles from where I launched at Mansfield. Idled/crept a quarter of the way back till I had the idea to tap the glass and saw the needle magical you drop 2000 rpms.

Not only were my RPM really high at 3/4 throttle but I was not getting the speed I needed either. I am going to replace my bushing on prop and see of that helps. Also my prop has these little rubber grommets where the three find meet the cylinder on prop. Would that cause my loss off power ?? I pray it is just the inner bushing. I didn't hit anything though. It was operating fine and then stopped and fished and on way back I noticed the high rpms at half the speed. Thought it was weight at back of boat but I told my wife to get in the front and it didn't help. Lol
