Re: How long does a hook last in a fish's mouth?

I would immagine that it would indeed stay in the fish for a while, but eventually fall out. *I'm no fish expert or anything, but with humans the body removes stuff on its own. *I know I've had my fair share of splinters that I left alone and my body pushed them out. *My father fell through a glass door when he was younger and got glass in his bicep until about a month later when a peice of glass worked its way up to his shoulder and popped out. *I don't know how true it is for fish or how hard it is to get the barb through, but I imagine given some time (a couple of months) the fish's body would eventually get rid of the hook.

Re: How long does a hook last in a fish's mouth?

I once caught a fish that had a hook in it's throat and someone left a good 2 foot of line on the hook. It could have broken off, but looked more like a cut line since the hook was right in it's stomach opening. Anyway the fish had swallowed the line and it was hanging out it's poopshoot along with a crawfish leg. You like that visual? ;D Anyways, I'd say bass can live with the hook for a while it appears from that one sample. I did pop the hook out, by pulling the line out, running it out of the back of the gills to turn the hook and use pliers to pop the hook free. If done correctly the fish doesn't bleed and it doesn't turn the fish inside out. I then released a very lively and healthy 3 lb fish.

The "in-fisherman article link listed above is very informative and educational. It takes a little practice, but after you do it once- its a cake walk. I don't know if it is just me, but Decker lake is the worst/best lake around here for catching fish with tackle still in em! Probably the "bank sticks" providing most of the hardware, but then again I haven't seen them throw many back! Peace.

Found it. At least one of them. BobSp posted it. I've seen a few other posts on this subject. I know another link. I'll post it up in a sec
Thanks again RMV for posting this article as it came in handy out on LT (my first boat trip). I was able to remember enough about the article to actually save a nice bass that swallowed the Collector's shaky head pretty far down. I went in through the gills, turned the jig, then reached down the throat and was able to pull it out. Took some time but I think it was worth it because the bass was able to swim off (even though he lost a lot of blood; but it did stop bleeding before we let him go). Let's just hope he made it. He would have been one dead bass for sure if you didn't post this so thanks again!

Yeah man, no problem. I actually did the same to a dink on LA a few weeks ago. Through the gills, and out it went. Glad to hear you saved it's life. Some people cut there lines. I think more people need to be educated on this technique so more fish will live.

It was fun to try it and I'm glad it seemed to work, but I'm not quitting my day job :P
