doh. my motor is fuel injected. looks like you're dealing with carbs. the VST and all the assembly around it is a part of the fuel injection.

Your fuel pumps are the same though. You can test those.

Pull the mounting screws that hold them to your engine (dont disconnect any hoses). And do one pump at a time... If you prime the bulb when one of your fuel pumps is hanging free (not mounted to the engine, but still hooked up)... if any fuel comes out from behind the back side, through a tiny hole... then you have a blown fuel pump diaphragm and you should replace the pump. The hole that would leak the fuel is usually sealed up when the pump is flush mounted to the engine.

I've been told that replacing the pumps is something that should happen every 2-3 years anyway. The diaphragms blow out really easily.

Not sure that this will solve your problem though. But it's an easy thing to check. Still sounds like your might have a carb / float problem.

thanks for all of your help. i called the boat.net people and the guy told me to keep it simple and start with the air vent in my fuel tank and work towards the engine. he said he thinks it might be an air leak in a fuel line. i did notice some crud around the connection between the primer bulb and the line running to the engine. theres no fuel leak there but he said it may be pulling air.
i'm going to cut about 4" off there and re-attach. thers no fuel line disconnect anywhere tht i can see. is it ok to just cut the line or will fuel go everywhere?

no clue what will happen if you cut the line. The air leak could also be happening from those low pressure fuel pumps having broken diaphragms. but i don't know for sure.

With my engine, anytime something is acting up, it's safe to assume it's tied to the VST / Fuel delivery system. But the Boat.net people are definitely right... Start as close to the tank and work towards the engine.

Just a little update...not that anyone cares but maybe it will save someone some money.

My Yammie is running like a top again. I replaced the plugs, fuel filter, water/fuel sperator. Ran the shock treatment and replaced the plugs again. Still surging but not as bad. Yesterday I put electrical tape around both ends of the primer bulb.....problem solved. I will replace primer bulb before next trip.
