    So you may remember my engine popped while on Fayette...no alarms, nothing, #6 piston just let go.

    I had a trip the next day on Bastrop. Figured I could idle around and be ok since it's such a small lake....engine flashed the "check engine" light and went into guardian mode...

    POPS,

    What's the year and make of you motor?

    How are you purging the air out of the system?
    The best way to purge the air, is unscrew the lid on the reservoir tank, wrap some rags around the neck, start the motor. Once the oil starts to come out, screw the lid back down.

    Are you sure the float on the reservoir cap is good?
    They do go bad.

    Which alarm is it?
    If it's a merc, the heat alarm is a constant beep, and the oil alarm is a beep beep beep.

    On a merc (at least the older mercs), the water in fuel alarm is the same beep beep beep you get with the oil alarm. Dump or replace your fuel filter.

    Pivo, it is a 1998 Merc 150 efi, the beep will beep once....then run for a while then beep again. I have had it out since and no beep but once the last time out. I purge by taking the oil cap off in the engine reserve and crank the motor for 20 to 30 second intervals. The cap is new or at least a year or so old since the last one cracked on me and spewed oil everywhere.

    Pops,

    Sounds very similar to my last experience with the alarm. Every once in awhile, while running across choppy water, I'd get the intermittent beep. When I slowed, it would never beep. My problem was air in the engine reservoir. The reservoir looked full, but I purged it anyway and it solved my problem. The float does not have to travel far to trip the alarm.

    Let me see if I understand correctly. When you purge the air out of your oil system, you just crank the engine? Or do you actually start it?

    Here's details of how I purge the air out of my oil system:
    - Trim the motor down or as close to level as possible.
    - Unscrew the cap on the engine reservoir. I don't take it off, just unscrew it enough so that oil can escape.
    - Wrap rags around the neck.
    - Put the ear muffs on the motor and turn the water on.
    - Start the engine. Don't worry, oil won't immediately pump out from the cap.
    - When oil starts to soak your rags, tighten the cap down.
    - Kill the engine.
    - Turn off the water and your done.
