How do you test the altinator?

I had a dead battery today. It ran fine last Sunday, so I assume some power source was left on for the week. The dead battery would not hold any real charge, so I replaced it. It now starts and everything seems fine.

I am now nervous that the alternator may not have been charging the battery. The motor is a Mercury XR6 150. How do I test if the alternator is working properly?

I just want to make sure everything is good before heading out again.

Good question. I have a Yamaha250 that did the same thing, replaced the battery and never thought about the alt.?

Is there a good on-line resource to look up appropraite batteries for specific outboard motors? They have such resources for cars, but I can't find anything for outboard motors.

I'll try to talk to Jackie at the tackle shop tomarrow. I don't know if he knows but he is the only guy that I know here to ask.

Re: How do you test the altinator?

Jim - Thanks for the advice. I did notice that while driving it today (after jump starting the engine) that the voltage measured ~ 13.5. So, assuming the gauge on my console is correct this would indicate that the altinator is working.

    Thanks again.
