small trolling motor battery
Hello, I'm new to the forum and am in the process of mounting a motorguide 30lb TM to my dads kayak.. The 75lb dual purpose stowaway batt. that's brand new is simply too heavy. I really need some advice on what type of smaller deep cycle batt. would work. I am willing to sell this brand new batt. super cheap so i can recuperate the cost since i now need to buy a smaller, less expensive battery. Im willing to take a hit. Any ideas??

I wouldn't down size too much, you'd be surprised how quick even a 30#er will suck battery on a windy day. Did you look at Academy? You could get the smallest batt they have and do pretty well.
BTW Welcome to ABF

Re: small trolling motor battery
Here's a rule of thumb:
a) Find out what your TM draws on max speed eg. 30amp-hour.
b) Find out what the battery capacity is at full charge, eg. 75 amp-hours.
divide b) by a) so 75/30 = 2.5 hours.
Your battery should run the TM for 2.5 hours at max speed on full charge.
I bought an Everlast Marine 75amp-hour at Walmart and it has run my 30lb TM over 3 hours, haven't run out of juice yet. I think it's less than 50lbs.If you think healthcare is expensive, wait till its free.

Re: small trolling motor battery
you may have to put tx numbers on your dad's yak if you put a motor on it fyi. I put a tm on my canoe and a gw gave me a citation for no tx #'s at five mile dam one day. He was really cool :P

Re: small trolling motor battery
You can but most FF have voltage sensor that cuts it off at low voltage. This is to protect circuitry. If the Batt runs low and you put the TM on high the voltage may drop below allowable limits and turn the unit off, requiring a reset. Annoying yes, but it won't hurt the unit.
