Hit up the "Lap" both Mon-Tues night for a few. Got my a$$ run off there last night--freaking storm of the century blew in right when fishing was getting good. Been catching decent numbers (10-15 afternoon trip 2 hour), with a few decent fish 4-5 lb range about every other trip--up SHALLOW. All in less than 3 FOW, pretty much flipping 100% of the time. Water is down, but this seems to keeps the crowds at bay--which is fine with me.
Lower end of the lake looks like choc milk, but seems to be the most stable water. Top half of the lake has that notorious Dunlap snot/crud floating everywhere, and the current piles it up in every spot that would be a prime spot to flip-pitch a lure. Water is much clearer, but there must not be much oxygen, as all the bait seems to be on the lower end of the lake. Cannot get a topwater bite going to save my a$$--I swear these fish never look up.
Be careful running after dark, almost ran over a couple hippies toking up some reefer in their kayaks Monday. Seriously, right smack in the middle of the damn lake. I saw some ripples, knew something wasn't right, and swerved to miss their hemp wearing a$$es at the last second. Lights work pretty good, that ol" lightbulb thing Edison invented--works pretty good--and continues to have multiple uses.
Thre are allot of rental properties all along that lake and I just don't think allot of those people know any better. I've seen 'em out in the middle of the lake lounging on those bed floaties, with icechest and radio blasting. They think its like floating the comal, except with 70+mph bass boats running by them.
BTW Timberlake, what kind of boat do you run? I've probably seen you around town or on the lake.
I have 2 comments:
1. Try a buzz bait late in the evening, a black/red, doesn't get a ton of bites, but usually a 4+ and a few in the 2lb range.
2. After dark, the entire GBRA chain is Idle Speed Only. With that being said, I go on plane after dark too, but rest assured that if you hit one of those "Hippies", our "on plane after dark killing them violation" will trump their "no lights on a kayak after dark violation" in the wrongful death law suit.
Thanks for the buzzbait idea. haven't thrown one in a while.
In reference to the "hippies" on kayaks comment--I was simply stating that there are certain precuations that EVERYONE on a lake---at night---should use. If you want to be seen (and not get hit//run over), have a light on--just like on any other lake in the country.
I did not know that there was a law on the GBRA lakes about that, so thanks for the heads up. I am always cautious at night, and go about as slow as possible--just enough to stay on plane.

I really want to fish this since I live pretty close and I have never been there. But I have held off due to the low water level. Whats it really like? I hear it's kinda dangerous, but then see guys like yourself are still on it. And how are the weekend mornings with other traffic? Thats about the only time I can get away usually.
Hey Timberlake, good to hear a report from you! We are going to Turkey Cove next weekend 7th till 10th with family from Ft worth, Norman OK and south Florida. I still will get out Friday and hunt down some LM and maybe see some schooling early.
