Whats the desired test line for catfish off the bank?

thinking of putting some new line on my catfish pole, thinking of going up to 20lb instead of 15. too much or a good move? Is any other bait other than stink bait as effective?

Depends on your fish target size, and what's available, where you are fishing. I'd like 30+ mono on a big reel to be sure not to break off on magnum yellows and blues. If you're fishing a pond and all the cats are 2-4 lbs, then 15-20 lb is fine. But if you're bank fishing from Travis for example, expect some heartbreak breakoffs on the rocks if you hook a 30 lb blue or better. Better to have a long rod to keep the line off the rocks and a big reel full of 30+ lb line in case a big boy gets on there. Good luck.

I haven't had any issues with my 30lb power pro braid. the new world record of 143lb blue was caught on a 30lb mono line a couple weeks ago.

my dad has huge setups with 65-80lb braid and has broken off on rocks before. some of it's just luck.

I'm usually actively fishing for bass but sometimes I enjoy simply tossing a stink line in the water and getting blackout drunk while the stink bait does the fishing for me. Any good recommendation for catfish specific spots? (preferably south, but I'll go anywhere for them)

What's fun about a trotline you ask.... Well for starters, I get to bass fish while waiting on the catfish to get with the program. Any questions???

When you boat up to your line and see the jug hanging low and heavy in the water, bobbing up and down some, you know there are some fish on there. That's fun, the anticipation. Then as you run the line waiting to see what is on each hook, that's fun too. Then when the line starts thrashing furiously as that 20 lber gets pissed that you're bringing him up, well, that's fun too. Trying to get the net under a beast and the hook out, well, that's fun too. Hauling back a cooler full of cats to get a killer pic is fun. Drinking the beer is fun. Having the fish fry is fun too. Other than that it sucks.
