Kayak Roof-Top Transport - Without factory installed Rails?
Mar 10th, 2010, 4:05pm

Hi Folks,

I have a bit of a dilemma. I have received two kayaks as a gift; however I have absolutely no way of getting them to the water! I will tell you that I drive a Toyota Corolla, and I don’t have any factory bars installed.

Can anyone point me the right direction (besides buying a truck) of how I can get two single-person kayaks down to the water at Highway speeds? I am willing to clunk some money down to get some factory installed rails on my roof, but I just do know the best place to start.

Thanks!

Cheapest way...

Straps on each bow to front bumper; Straps on sterns to rear bumper

2 Pool noodles between car and kayaks, with 2 straps over the kayak, through windows.

Twist the straps so they don't flap n flutter.

Search http://austinkayakfishing.com/ and http://www.texaskayakfisherman.com/  for more ... I've never put two on a cartop without racks, but some do ...

They make a set of foam blocks, about $25.00 that act similar to pool noodles, made especially for cartopping kayaks.  I had some, but used the foam for other stuff after buying a trailer, else I'd give them to you.

Do NOT over-tighten straps if you use RATCHET straps ... (if you do and you oilcan/dent the kayak, you have to remove dent with hot water and towel, or black garbage bag and sunlight heat...

Don't get factory bars get some Yakima or Thule add on bars. That way when you aren't using them you can take them off. They also have several loading options for boats so that you don't have to lift the entire yak if you dont want to.

Keep the width of you yaks handy so that you know what length bars to purchase. Especially if you want both on top at the same time.

The guys over at Austin Kayak can find you a set or you can also get them at REI.
