Keel Guard adhesive removal from hull
Mar 04th, 2010, 10:19pm

My Keel Guard was coming loose in a few areas and nothing I did to to re-adhere it to the hull worked.  So I went ahead and removed it completely from the hull.  In doing so I am now left with a considerable amount of gray adhesive residue on the hull that has proven nearly impossible to remove.  I went to the Keel Guard website and they suggest using a pinstripe or decal removing wheel attached to a drill or air tool.  I took their advice and ordered these pinstripe removing discs/wheels from a NAPA store.  The good news is they do remove the adhesive without damaging the gel coat but it's a very, very slow process.  I was wondering if anyone has dealt with this same issue and has a more effective and less time consuming method?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Have you already tried paint thinner or acetone?

sounds like a real pain in the butt no matter what.denatured alcohol might work and is less toxic than acetone.the denatured alcohol works good cleaning rod blanks of glue from decals and cork tape which is pretty sticky stuff, good luck.the acetone might work but i hate to use the fumes, takes my breath away when using large amounts.

Soak down an area with WD-40, let sit for an hour then heat slightly with a heat gun. Scrape with plastic ice scraper.

Thanks for the advice.  I've tried all the solvents designed to remove adhesives that are not too harsh for gel coat, including those suggested (thanks again), without any luck.  This adhesive is tough!  I've not tried the WD-40 and heat though.  I will give that a shot and report back.  Thanks!

Well, the soaking with WD-40 and then using a heat gun and plastic scraper worked.  Now having said that, I didn't have a heat gun so I used a hairdryer and kept it very close to the adhesive residue as I heated.  The combination of WD-40 and heat did loosen the adhesive residue enough to slowly scrape it off.  Slowly being the operative word...and inch at a time.  But after several (3+) hours of laying on my back on the garage floor and heating then scraping I finally got all the Keel Guard adhesive removed from the hull...ugh!  Thanks again for the advice.  Now off to the chiropractor I go...lol.

Sorry about the bad back, should have added a teenager to the list of necessary tools. Heat guns are $20 at Harbor Freight but will do damage if used to agressively. Glad ya made it happen..

We own a vehicle wrap and graphics shop and we encounter the toughest of adhesives. The only thing we have found that works on anything is a degreaser called Big Orange. We order it by the case from a company called Zep. Just spray it on let it sit for a couple of minutes and scrape it off with a plastic razor blade.

Thanks Waylon.  Sounds like a product I should keep around the garage.  I think I will order some.

Thanks again,
